Try doing what I did for a Friend's Birthday. Give Him the money to buy and restock a tackle box of His choosing. Money: One size fits all and it goes with everything He owns. Seriously, a fishing tackle box is a sacred thing (not unlike a handbag: only more so). It does not matter what You purchase for Your Husband, He will always want something else. Trust Me on this. I have fishing gear that was given to Me as gifts that I shall never use unless I move overseas. A Man likes to ponder the manifold mysteries of the contents of His creel, it is a form of religious experience that few of the uninitiated can comprehend. Give a Man a gift and You will be expecting Him to use it. Let Him buy his own and You can never be held accountable for His bad luck. Have a quick look at a catalog and get an idea of the price range that You are prepared to accommodate, then add 25% for good measure. Easy. Pure and simple. Just like the art of fishing should be.
Remember one thing: What one fisherman considers to be essential is rubbish to another angler. The contents of The Box is a subjective and highly personal topic. Save Your marriage and let Him make His own selection (if You are there He may actually explain the use of each item to You, thus sharing in His enjoyment).

NB: No books on How to catch Fish!

Tight lines!

Tiffani, you have a great present planned for him. I'd be a little leary of choosing his tacklebox. There is such a variety of boxes available, it would probably be best if he got to pick his own, along with all the tackle to fill it. Tackle specific to his particular needs as far as what type of fish he prefers to go after. You could cut out pictures of tackle boxes, tackle, etc. and put them in the envelope that has a gift card/certificate to his favorite place to buy fishing stuff. He's gonna love it, It sounds like he's as lucky as I am, my wife would do the same...If he's a bass fisherman, have him visit my website @ for some great articles and tips...

First I commend you for the thoughtfulness. It's the perfect gift for a fisherman. No ties please!! And without knowing what he likes to fish for, I agree with maybe a gift card to a local tackle shop or you can get one from Bass Pro Shop online and he'll be able to pick out what he needs. Remind him he's lucky. Most Dads get a shirt or a tie.

Buy him a new tackle box, then put a gift certificate for his favorite fishing store in it.
Next would be the same only instead of the gift certificate, put some cash in it.
With out knowing what kind of fishing, or what part of the world you are in, is hard to say what to get him.

W/O knowing what kind of fish he likes to fish for I hazard the following.

*A hook assortment. Usually you can find a circular container hodling various sized hooks.

*Split shot assortment. Usually you can find a circular container hodling various sized hooks.

A nail clippers - they are very useful in cutting trimming line.

A needle nosed pliers.

A crank bait or two (rapala shad raps).

A couple of safety pin spinner baits (colors orange, yellow green)

A couple of straight shaft spinner baits.

A couple of surface baits one buzz spinner and one minnow (Rapala). 4-5 long.

One count down rapala about 3-4 long.

A reminder of who gave him the gift. ;-)
