Before the materials like carbon fiber composites (graphite) and fiberglass came upon the scene, fly fishing rods were made from bamboo. Ask any fishing enthusiast about bamboo rods and you’ll be drawn into stories about fishing with Dad or Grandpa and their beloved bamboo fly fishing rod.

Many of these anglers revere these old bamboo rods and consider them family heirlooms. Some consider restoring these rods and using them to fly fish. Others are content to hang them over the mantle as homage to the “good old days”.

Don’t Retired the Rods, Yet
Is it time to say goodbye to the old bamboo fly rods? No. In fact, if you have one of the rods, you might want to take it off the wall or out of the closet and give it a good going-over. These classic rods are enjoying a surge in popularity and manufacturers are producing them again. Go to your favorite Orvis, Hardy or Leonard dealer and you’ll find brand new bamboo fly rods for sale.

Custom rods are available, too. These hand-crafted rods take as many as 50 hours to create. As a result, they can be pretty pricey. They are built to last, though, so one rod could last long enough to be handed down through the family.

Why Buy a Bamboo Fly Rod?
Modern technology has improved fishing rod materials to the point of revolutionizing the industry. Why would you want to buy an old-fashioned bamboo rod, when you can get the latest and greatest rod made from the latest and greatest material?

Maybe you don’t want bamboo rod. If technology and state-of-the-art carbon fiber rods are your preference, a bamboo rod may not be for you. If, however, you prefer a rod that’s part of nature, that shines like gold in the sunlight and is warm to the touch, then a bamboo fly rod is just what you need.

Where and How Much?
You can buy bamboo rods in a variety of places. Individuals and companies offer rods that are hand-crafted in their homes and workshops. These beauties don’t come cheap, though. Plan to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000. That’s a lot of money, but many of these craftsmen provide a lifetime repair guarantee, which eases some of the burden.

As mentioned above, many of the major rod manufacturers make bamboo fishing rods. Fishing sites online sell them as well.

Buy Used?
Remember that family heirloom mentioned earlier? Well, there is a lot of interest in restoring and collecting those old bamboo fly rods. If you like the idea of a classic rod, but Grandpa’s is in no shape to use, check the Internet. It’s a great resource for antique and vintage rods.

Be aware that these “used” rods vary in price and condition. Examine them for cracks, separated seams and unusual discolorations. If some of the guides are loose or the handle needs repair, don’t worry. The condition of the bamboo is the most important characteristic. Guides and other parts can be and are inexpensive to repair and replace.

Deep sea fishing is a classic tale of man battling nature. Snagging a marlin, or a shark or a large sea bass can be the heart-thumping experience of a lifetime. If you don’t have the right reel, though, your adventure can quickly become a disaster. Below is a checklist for choosing the right deep sea fishing reel.

Buy Quality

Before you get down to the nitty gritty of which type of reel you need for what fish in which environment, you must begin with a quality manufacturer. Two companies that have produced quality reels for decades are Penn and Daiwa. They promise a good deep sea fishing reel and they deliver.

There are other companies that produce quality deep sea fishing reels, too. Be sure and take some time to investigate what brands are well-known and reputable before you buy. The Internet is great place to do some research. You can investigate different makes and models and compare prices. Another source of information is a store that specializes in ocean fishing. Talk to the personnel there, or to an experienced deep sea fisherman. Either of them can steer you in the right direction.

Match Reel to Fish

Different fish behave differently. Some are large and slow. Some are large and fast. Some fish twist and turn when hooked. Others run as fast as they can, trying to get away. The reel needs to match the temperament of the fish. For a runner, you’ll need a lot of fishing line, which means you need a large capacity reel. For a fighter, you may need heavier line to handle the strain. The reel, then, would need to be strong enough to handle the additional weight.

Fish also hunt and live in different parts of the ocean. Some fish, such as flounder and sea bass, like to feed on the bottom. If you want to snag a flounder, you need a reel designed for bottom feeders. If you buy the wrong reel, say a spinning reel, you’re going to get frustrated. On the other hand, if your fish prefers shiny lures, a bottom feeder reel isn’t going to be much help. For this fish, a spin reel is ideal, because it puts more action on the lure to better attract the fish.

Size and Weight

There are many, many different types of fishing reels. Some reels are too small or too light and aren’t suitable for deep sea fishing at all. Others can only be used for surf fishing or fishing in channels. Still other reels are heavier or hold more fishing line. In other words, reels are like are designed for a unique purpose. If you understand this fact, you’ll be more successful with purchasing the right deep sea fishing reel.

Bottom Line

This checklist may seem complicated, but buying a deep sea fishing reel is straightforward. All you need to do is match a high quality reel with the type of fishing, and you’re ready to go out and land the “big one”. Good luck!
